چکیده

Elastic rods are thin flexible objects typically undergoing large non-linear deformations that cannot be modeled with linear methods. They are used in a number of research fields, e. g., to represent hair or ropes in animations, or catheters or needles in medical simulations. In this paper, we propose a deformation model for inextensible elastic rods. The method of Lagrange multipliers is employed to enforce the inextensibility of the rod, and to couple the material frames with the centerline. The resulting system is banded, allowing for an efficient linear time solution. We also propose a manifold projection method to incorporate the non-penetration constraints resulting from contact handling into our constrained Lagrangian mechanics

On the Curve Straightening Flow of Inextensible, Open, Planar Curves

We consider the curve straightening flow of inextensible, open, planar curves generated by the Kirchhoff bending energy. It can be considered as a model for the motion of elastic, inextensible rods in a high friction regime. We derive governing equations, namely a semilinear fourth order parabolic equation for the indicatrix and a second order elliptic equation for the Lagrange multiplier. We p...

Euler-Lagrange Equations for Nonlinearly Elastic Rods with Self-Contact

We derive the Euler-Lagrange equations for nonlinear elastic rods with self-contact. The excluded volume constraint is formulated in terms of an upper bound on the global curvature of the centreline. This condition is shown to guarantee the global injectivity of the deformation mapping of the elastic rod. Topological constraints such as a prescribed knot and link class to model knotting and sup...

An Augmented Lagrangian Method to Solve Three-dimensional Nonlinear Contact Problems

A nite element formulation to deal with the friction contact problem between an elastic body and a rigid foundation is presented. An augmented Lagrangian method, which incorporates two Lagrange multipliers and a slack variable in the constraint equation, is developed. In this method, the solution is achieved through a Newton-Raphson monolithic iterative strategy and leads to simple implementati...

Mixed finite element formulation in large deformation frictional contact problem

This paper presents a mixed variational framework and numerical examples to treat a bidimensional friction contact problem in large deformation. Two different contact algorithms with friction are developed using the 2D finite element code PLAST2. The first contact algorithm is the classical node-on-segment, and the second one corresponds to an extension of the mortar element method to a unilate...

Direct Position-Based Solver for Stiff Rods

In this paper, we present a novel direct solver for the efficient simulation of stiff, inextensible elastic rods within the PositionBased Dynamics (PBD) framework. It is based on the XPBD algorithm, which extends PBD to simulate elastic objects with physically meaningful material parameters. XPBD approximates an implicit Euler integration and solves the system of nonlinear equations using a non...
